The thing I like about that film is did the caretaker really go mad due to the isolation, or was he driven insane by forces of the hotel. Its perfectly possible to say that the isolation got to him (shows how close he was to his family though, ha) and that he halluncinated everything, but if that was the case, how did he get out of the locked storage room?

A mission based on The Shining would be a good addition

i had forgotten about the locked storage room in the shining! yeah it makes you think. the guy was probably driven mad by a combo of both. being stuck in the middle of nowhere with aload of ghosts would probably be enough to drive anyone mad!!

Like I've said before... read the book. It leaves absolutely no room for question. The movie, while not bad, didn't do it justice. The hotel was most definitely haunted, and it was the combination of this haunting, the guy's stress and former drinking problem, and the isolation that drove him nuts. -Kitty

I have read the book Kitty, Stephen King is one of my favourite horror novolists.
Unfortunately most of the screen adaptations of his novels range from mediocre to downright terrible. The shining was about the best of them, followed by Cujo, remember that one, about the rabid St Bernard who terrorises a women and her young son trapped in a broken down car.
Another good book by King but dismall film adaptation was IT. I recommend the book...stay away from the film.

Agreed.
It was pathettic. I mean, it made an ok movie... so long as you don't want to have ANY clue what the hell the book was actually about =p
And yeah, I do remember Cujo. That one worked out because the subject was a lot more simple to portray I think. And you're right.. The Shining was one of the better conversions. Doesn't say much for the rest of 'em considering how bad it failed really hehe.

Just another thought to add to the Stephen King to Film debate.
There have recently been a few better attempts at converting his books, he has written the screenplays for some mini-series.
Most notable among these was The Stand, a great book, and quite closely followed plot wise in the mini series.
I bought The Stand (about 5 hours long) and another good one AND funnily enough the the subject that started this mini debate, The Shining (again about 5-6 hrs long). Not quiet as good as The Stand but definately a more accurate recount of the novels plot. It even has the bit where the Topiary animals start moving!

Something to bring this topic onto the top again - if your interested in watching a mid level good old fashioned ghost and haunted house type TV program/series, then I would reccommend Stephen King's Rose Red.
Some of the characters are cliche its true, but its even more fun to watch in the sense of what happens. Good effects/believable haunted house as well.

Yes it is a good traditional Haunted house horror story, and based on real life. The person who had the house built and his wife really exist. The house is real as well supposedly
