Here is a way to edit haunter power levels by hex-editing the save game file. Normally, you must use a haunter over and over again for it to gain experience. This can take a VERY long time, but the end result is that the haunter will use its powers more effectively.
I think I've found the entry in the save game file for each haunter that corresponds to its level. The value itself seems to indicate how much experience (time in play, mortals scared, missions used, etc.) the haunter has, rather than its actual level number. The higher the value, the more experience. I'm not sure what the necessary experience thresholds are for the haunter to gain its next level (levels run from 0 to 8), but it seems that a value of 7D(hex) is sufficient to reach the top level. Other values are likely possible... I just know that this one works!
Hex offset in save file to first haunter entry: +2FE
Hex offset from start of haunter entry to level entry: +1D4
Change this single-char value to: 7D(hex)
When you start the game and go to the Ghoul Room, read each haunter's epitaph. If the hex editing worked, your haunter should be at its max level. I won't go into complete detail here, but each haunter class has special titles for levels 5-8:
Level 0 = wild
Level 1 = untrained
Level 2 = housebroken
Level 3 = domesticated
Level 4 = trained
Level 8 Sprite = wicked
Level 8 Disturbance = berserk
Level 8 Elemental = radiant
Level 8 Vapor = furious
Level 8 Frightener = awesome
Level 8 Horror = infernal
I am using the USA version of the game, so I cannot swear that this will hold true for non-USA game versions. I have experienced no negative in-game effects from editing these levels, but that doesn't mean I won't run into some later. Bottom line - use at your own risk, backup your saved games before editing, and don't blame me if anything goes wrong!
Have fun!
