when we say chups we don't mean chips as in flat little potato snacks that usually are flavoured with cheese and onion, salt & prawn thingytail our chips are big chunky juicy chips that are made of big chunks of potato.

Good idea - someone needs to inform the Americans about the abuse of our language. Hehehehe.
Chips, are indeed, manna from heaven, and must not be mistaken for a flavoured, reconstituted potato snack, served in plastic in 20-30g portions, and marketed at kids.
Chips are, made (well, cooked) for you by your friendly take-away cook, or in your own kitchen (if you're frugal or on some weird health drive). And they aren't really thin. That's a Fry. And they should probably all be shot.

Actually, it's pretty simple over here. We call chips the little baked goods, though they're far from marketed at kids and sold in all sorts and sizes of containers. They're sometimes made from potatoes, sometimes corn, sometimes god knows what. But those are chips. Fries are the McDonald's type french fry. simple, straight forward, and pretty much universal nowdays. Also crappy in many locations, so when you find a place with good ones, you mark it on the map =p the things you guys tend to call chips would be akin to what we call steak fries or potatoe wedges. We have 'em, just go by a different name. But any of us "yanks" worth our salt knows damn well that over there across the pond we'd call those chips. -Kitty

America has enjoyed the Fish n' Chips for a while now thanks to Arthur Treacher. www.arthurtreachers.com/about-at.htm My family would make the trip for fish and chips once a week when I was young. Afterwords on the way home, we would proudly wave the little British flags they gave us out the car windows and Dad would do his best impression of Sir Winston Churchill..... "Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duty and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth lasts for a thousand years men will still say, "This was their finest hour." Next time you make some potatoes, mash em' up and put some garlic spices and butter in there...quite tasty! Your Spookilicious Friend, BoogieMan

MMmmmmm Garlic & butter taters.. Don't forget a pinch of sage, a tiny smidge of taragon, and a sprinkle of parsley (that one mostly just for a bit of color) But he's right.. them's good taters. You can use gravy on 'em if you want, but if you do 'em right, you won't even need any. -Kitty
