I also have an 8800GTS, Windows Vista x64, and it's crashing for me in exactly the same way - a few screen flickers of black and while, then an application crash dialog box.
I know it's only $4.95, but I was quite looking forward to playing it :-(
Things I've tried: setting the "Application compatability" on the .exe properties changing my res to non-widescreen (1024x768) disabling Vista's fancy graphics system (Aero)
Anyone else have any ideas?

You can't by any chance see why it's failing (i.e. what the dialog says)?

Nah, it gives absolutely 0 warning as to why it's crashing other than the flickers of the screen. I've actually only been able to see the crash dialog box since I rolled back my drivers (I'm not sure that it's an improvement), as earlier, I simply had to C-A-D out.
By the way, I tried Steam's Ghost Master on my girlfriend's laptop and it worked perfectly, so it's not just Steam, either.

By the way, I've submitted a support request to Empire Interactive (who's now in charge of Xplosiv's Ghost Master IP) about the situation, since it seems that multiple users have the same problem. It's 6:39 EST, so I probably won't get a human answer 'till next week, but I'll keep you all updated. Until then, please keep thinking and searching for the fixes.

Sorry about the triple post, but I've installed Vista 64 on my laptop with an X1100 radeon integrated card, and GM runs wonderfully. It's definitely an nVidia error, maybe simply just an error with the later model GPUs...

Update on having contacted Empire Customer Support:
Asking a very well laid out and detailed question that took approximately 10 minutes to lay out and then simplify, so it only took about 10 seconds to read, I received my answer today. A very unhelpful, incorrect, and unfriendly
"Hi, Ghostmaster will not work with Windows Vista, it is quite an old game and was not designed to run on vista. Regards.. Support."
It does, in fact, run on Vista, even the 64 bit versions. I do it all the time now on my laptop, but I still want to find a fix for the people who only have the ability to run it on their desktops. I'm still a little frustrated by the obviously hasty response to my question, which obviously disregarded my statement that GM does function perfectly on Vista.

Yeah, let's prove them wrong! What a rubbish answer!

Welp, booting the game on returning to my dorm, it works on my desktop.
I've changed nothing.
It's all of a sudden deciding to run.
8800GTS, Vista 64 and all...
Weird as hell.

Further contact with the publisher yielded a longer, more explanatory, but even less friendly
"Hi, Although it may work on your laptop, the game does not support the use of Windows Vista, shown on the rear of the box are the OS that it was designed to work with. You may well get it to run but you will have problems as you have mentioned below. This will be attributed to the fact you are using Windows Vista. We cannot help you with this matter as we do not support the use of ghost master on an operating system the game was not designed for. Regards. Support."
So, basically, according to them, there's no hope for anyone running Vista to find help simply BECAUSE they run Vista. I've done my best, ladies and gentlemen. I'm gonna see if I can remember any recent changes I've made to my desktop and try to replicate a fix...
