Personally mine crashed more often after I updated to the latest Detonator drivers. I havent yet found anything that alters the frequency of crashing to desktop - other than the level I'm on - Weird Seance is about the only 1 on act 1 that crashes at all - all the others don't crash, even if I take ages over them, whereas on act2, Unusual Suspects crashes pretty much every single time, and I've never got past Blair Wisp at all - it always crashes long before I even get close to finishing the level.

Another problem is that some driver uninstall functions (virtually all) neglect to remove every entry. As such remnants of old installs can often be found on PCs causing much un-needed interactions. Of course there are some who just update drivers over the top of old ones (which isn't that bad nowadays to be fair).
Other things I do if a program isn't running is disabling background processes (as a rule I have the bare minium of services and programs running).
Also usually a very good way to stop crashes is simply to go into DXDiag (from the run option) and disable all sound acceleration.

I recommend the use of RegCleaner. When you uninstall something run RegCleaner and look for entries from that software to make sure it really is uninstalled. I had my first crash last night by the way (Blair Wisp project after about 3 hours of play). I've not identified the cause yet - next time I'l run a memory-trace event log to see if there's a memory leak.
