Have you tried changing the cursor? Some graphics cards seem to have issues with the cursor in one form or another.
Other than that, the usual - latest video drivers, close all other programs etc etc

managed to fix the problem (after trying for a week) by going to nvidia.com and downloading their latest display drivers, overwriting the ones from my graphics card maker.

Glad you got it fixed, but updating drivers should always be the first thing you try.

Updating usually trades old bugs in for new on- I mean, fixes things To be fair though, if your unused to updating drivers it may not be the first thing you think of.

Its amazing really how much people do not understand how or what actually makes their PC work and the housekeeping that it requires all drivers checked at least every 4 - 6 weeks defragment the hard driver at least 1 - 2 months create restore points etc etc etc. If people did this then playing games would be easier no crashes no sound issues, its not always the software thats at fault its the people who buy the PC's that havent a clue how to look after them. The PC is a child it needs attention love and caring to reap returns. Software updates only resolve issues that may not have been considered regarding the thousands of configurations that can be created by manufacturers not including the game pads, steering wheels etc that are out there. Many people are always to eager to contact support ares explaining that they have all the latest drivers but in reality if they checked their dxdiag information ( 9.0a latest ) and looked at the versions and dates then they could fix the issue within minutes. Im not saying all software is perfect but lets get everyone to start at the basics and work up from there. Save alot of heartache, dising of software and anger management. This is a good product pretty stable and fun to use ok it has a few bugs but only on game play other than that pretty neat. Oh yes if you think im being hard im not I just think that people should understand their PC or buy a PS2 if they want an easy life. Love the Forum Love the site Good call puting this together. Respect.... caper

I agree with you casper, but a lot of people don't have the time to stay up to date - they just want to buy a PC that works for everything. My machine is fine because I'm interested in computers and used to do tech support for a living.
In summary though, this is what I do if a game doesn't work:
* Download the latest game patch, if available. * Read the patch / original "readme" file. * Check for video driver update. Set my drivers to the "default" setting. * Check for audio driver update. Disable 3D audio. * Check for motherboard driver update. * Hit the forums for the game and my hardware (I use http://www.rage3d.com) * Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com

you have got it in one there my friend but If you buy something as complex as a PC then you should be responsible in servicing it yourself instead of letting it get out of date. Im not having a go at the forum users but amazed at even the basic knowlege of some of the people that vist here. I bet they can change a bulb in their car if it goes the same is for a driver...
Does it work NO Do I need a new one YES Go to the shop YES Obtain a new bulb YES Fit it YES Let there be light
Same as with a driver
Does the game work NO Do I need a new driver YES the one I have is out of date Go the Manufacturer of the Card YES Download Driver YES Does the game work YES
I think it is down to people being lazy and expecting tooo much from their computer without putting something into it. Your list was a good guide I hope that people take note. I have counted how many people have complained on here regarding the game not working and behold what was the solution YES the driver was out of date. Maybe the people who vist here will learn something and have a better understand of what to do next time....
Respect..... casper
