Bytespc, do you have this problem with other games as well, or is it just this game?
If you have no problems with other games, then it is due to the way the code reacts with your computer.. but if there are some other games that cause problems, it could be related to the graphics drivers or another part of the system.
Which OS are you using as well? XP? 2000? 98/95?

To all, my problem turned out to be a Graphics Card cooling fan seizing up, the problem only arose when the graphics became busy i.e lots of scares happening at once, temporary solution removed old fan and bodged a replacement, long term solution is a new card.
Temp is obviously crucial as the game is very graphic intensive so peeps look to your cooling , it worked for me.
Have fun and thanks to all those who answered...some strange remedies but thanks anyway.

finally solved the problem by replacing my ASUS drivers with ones direct from nvidia.
although game crashes when trying to revisit the 1st level, but none of the others....strange
